What is Rigs of Rods?

Rigs of Rods ("RoR") is an amateur video game, where you can drive trucks, cars and other heavy machinery, operate cranes, fly airplanes and sail boats in an open environment. Most of the fun in RoR comes from its innovative and realistic physics engine that simulates the flexibility and deformation of bodies, chassis and wheels under the stress they bear.

Is it really free? What license is it under?

RoR is a free, open source program. All rights are reserved to its author. In return, you agree that if you create a vehicle for RoR the author can include it in the official release, all credits given. The source code was kept closed for various reasons, but was recently released to the public for collaborative work in order to achieve greater progress.

Who is making RoR?

RoR is made in France by Pierre-Michel Ricordel (aka Pricorde) and Thomas.

Can my computer run RoR?

RoR requires a relatively recent machine to play well. While most games rely on the graphics card for most of its processing power (and this holds true for RoR, to the extent you have configured), RoR requires heavy processing power to calculate the large amount of physics equations going on at any given moment. Anything below 2GHz may not run well. Although RoR supports dual-core (as well as HyperThreading), it does not support quad-core or 64 bit systems.

RoR supports Windows XP/Vista, Linux (successfully run on Ubuntu and Gentoo), and MacOS X Leopard.

This game sucks.

This game is free, you do not have to play it, and despite its shortcomings, many people find it enjoyable. Remember that RoR is not a commercial game, but a one man hobby project!

Why has my game crashed?

Please see the Troubleshooting section for more detailed help.

How do I add trucks or loads to the terrains?

Please see the Tutorials section.

What is the EXPL key?

The EXPL tag is a special keyword used in defining commands.

In this example, only COMMANDS_01 is triggered when pressing F1, and COMMANDS_13 is triggered when pressing CTRL+F1 (but not COMMANDS_01)

COMMANDS_01 Keyboard EXPL+F1
COMMANDS_13 Keyboard EXPL+CTRL+F1

In this example, COMMANDS_01 would be triggered if you press CTRL+F1, as F1 is part of the COMMANDs_13 combination.

COMMANDS_01 Keyboard F1
COMMANDS_13 Keyboard CTRL+F1

How do I create a zip file or a "pack"?

In RoR you have the ability to use files that are called "packs" which are basically zip files. This simple guide will help you create one, in this example we will use WinRAR (however other zip/rar clients will work basically the same way)

  1. Select your files (lets say you want to make a truck into a pack file)
  2. You will need to select your files. For this example, you will need the following files (NOTE the names may be different in your case, this assumes you have 0.35 and also have the Dodge charger):
    1. dodgecharger.truck
    2. dodgecharger.mesh
    3. dodgecharger.material
    4. dodgecharger.dds
  3. Any file that is included with the game does not have to be included. If you do not include outside dependencies, it will most likely be rejected from the repository.
  4. Now that you have those files selected, right click on any of the highlighted files (the blue ones), then in your menu that just popped up look for "add to archive" (other programs may have slightly different saying) now a new window should open up. Now this may look confusing but its really simple to use!
    1. You should now see an area that reads "Archive format" you need to tick "ZIP" (RAR will be selected by default and will not work with RoR)
    2. Then if you want to, you can select the compression method. Maximum will decrease size but increase loading times. If your file is not very big, little to no compression is recommended.
    3. Now that you did that go to where it says "Archive name" and you should see the name of the file it (the program) will be giving to your new zip file, in this case it's (this assumes you have the files in your truck folder) "trucks.zip" you will need to change it to something like "Dodgecharger.zip" (leave the .zip bit alone)
  5. You're ready to make the new pack file, click "OK" and you will now have a new zip file named "Dodgecharger.zip"
  6. You can now right click that hit "cut" and then move to your packs folder and paste the file there.
  7. If you built whatever you packed, feel free to upload it to the repository if you wish to share your creation.

NOTE: If you pack up any files in your trucks folder and move the zip into your packs folder you MUST remove the files from your trucks folder or your game will crash from duplicate textures

Can I modify a stock vehicle?

Vehicles made by Pricorde (which is almost every truck file in the trucks folder) is available for editing; "there is no need to ask me for permission to modify a truck or terrain I have made. Permission is granted as long as it is made with respect and with appropriate credits."

Note that if the vehicle/terrain is NOT made by Pricorde, its license may vary and its author should be consulted.
